Disappearing Teachers, Fewer Classrooms
According to The New York City Independent Budget, Classroom spending would decline under the Mayor’s proposed budget and the city’s ambitious plans to continue to add building capacity is being scaled back. This marks the second year in a row the Bloomberg Administration has presented a budget that would decrease the number of teachers and classes (thereby increasing class size) and cut other school service.
The loss of 6,166 public school teacher jobs would include an anticipated 4,100 layoffs. It would be the first time the city’s public school teachers would get pink slips since the 1970s.
