Funding Shortfall Could Mean 16,000 Fewer Child Care Slots
According to The New York City Independent Budget, the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) which provides early childhood education through the federally funded Head Start program and subsidized child care programs for eligible families, provided care for about 102,000 children in 2010 down from a peak of 104,000 in 2009.
In the Proposed Budget for 2012 the number of recipients eligible for subsidized child care would drop by another 16,000 (or approximately 16%) to 86,000 children.
